A SLOW SOLACE: THE DESERT SERIES
A Slow Solace
At the heart of my practice is connection with place; the atmosphere and tactile sensations of unique environments. The places that have formed my connections are the temperate rainforest of Southeast Alaska, the high deserts around Moab, Utah, and the coastal mangrove wetlands of Nayarit, Mexico. Made from plaster, pigment, metal, and patina, my sculptural relief paintings explore memory of place. Central to this is the idea of impression: a mark made by pressure, but also a feeling left on someone. Just as life's experiences leave their marks on us, we too leave our mark on the world. This reciprocal impression, ecological and deeply personal, drives my work and its response to the fragility of our natural world and an innate human sense of belonging.
